Sometimes, you just wanna delve into a big pot o’ hummus, and what better thing to do it with than some cheese straws?!
Super duper easy (and cleaning up some pastry leftovers from another recipe coming soon!), these things are an instant win.
With a little kick of spice, these go perfectly with any dips you fancy, be it hummus, sour cream and chive, taramasalata…
Without further ado, let’s get started!
approx 75g puff pastry
1 tablespoon freshly grated parmesan
½ large egg, beaten
¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
a little plain flour (for dusting)
Preheat the oven to gas mark 6/400°f/200°c
Roll out the pastry thinly on a lightly floured surface, then brush with egg.
Sprinkle over the parmesan, cayenne pepper and a little seasalt and press these down into the pastry with your fingers.
Cut the pastry into strips about 1-2 inches wide
(For an extra kick of flavour, flip the pastry over and add the cayenne pepper, parmesan and salt to the other side too)
Hold each end of the strip and twist them round and round, then press the ends onto the baking tray
Pop them into the oven to bake until the twists are puffed or golden brown (8ish minutes)
Take ’em out, leave to cool (if you can manage it) then dig in!
You can make whatever variation you like, play about with different herbs and spices to find your perfect fix
Bring them along to a gathering, pack ’em up for a picnic in the sunshine or nibble on them throughout the day
